In response to the critical need for clean water in the Maasai Mara, we built Lemek Hills Purified Water in Mara North in partnership with the impact investment firm Global Water First. This facility has a 260-meter borehole, solar pumping, water storage, and a purification and bottling center.

The water is sourced from the large aquiver at the foot of Lemek Hills. Local families have free access to this deep-well water through a tap on site.

In 2026, Lemek Hills will begin selling bottled purified water in 10- or 20-liter refillable bottles (no single-use plastics), at a competitive price to safari camps, schools, and other businesses. At that time, Lemek Hills will be spun off to become its own enterprise, locally owned and employing members of the community. Proceeds will help support future water and education projects in the area.

The purified water at Lemek Hills has been certified by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS). It is filtered through a balanced combination of reverse osmosis (RO) and ultra-purification. RO removes the heavy fluoride salts often found in groundwater in this area. Access to groundwater also provides in times of year when water from rain harvesting is not sufficient.

Community members have free access to Lemek Hills deep-well water, through a tap on site. This well water will continue to be free for families.
