This fall... Build a Library, Transform Lives

And take home a gift from Kenya

A school in need

NAIRASIRASA PRIMARY IN MAASAI MARA is one of the most under-resourced schools we have worked with. A high-quality library here will transform this school and the lives and learning trajectory of 1000 children each year. This will be our 8th library in the region — and we have seen how one great library changes everything!

This project is a collaboration with the Maa Diaspora Community in the U.S. Their members raised funds to build the library building, as they know how much this is needed. Now it's up to us to provide the books, laptops, globes, and other educational materials (details below). We're asking for your help to bring this gift of literacy and learning to young people in need.

With our appreciation, we would like to send a gift to donors who give at least $100 to this cause. We have beautiful carryall bags in African kitenge fabrics, made by two women in Nairobi who support their families by doing this work, and we will mail you one (see below). So this campaign does two things:  boosts the education of 1000 children in need and helps women get their own kids out of the slums.

What will be in the library?
In the library

Like all our school library projects in the Mara, this one will have 2000 books (half for curriculum support, half storybooks for pleasure reading); wildlife and nature materials for the "conservation corner"; laptops preloaded with East African stories; and globes, posters, games, and puzzles. We also provide a 3-day workshop to train teachers and student librarians on maintaining the resource and running after-school reading programs. â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹

A gift for your kind support
A gift

We so greatly appreciate your support for this library, and we'd like to send you a gift for donations of at least $100. Barb brought back beautiful carryall bags from Nairobi made by two talented seamstresses, Pam and Damaris. Here they are at their workshop at Kenyatta Market — imagine, they do all that magic in that tiny space. They support their children entirely through this operation, and their work is such high quality. Each bag closes with a zipper, is lined, and has pockets on the inside, and also comes with a smaller bag. The fabrics are high-quality African kitenge, provided by our partner and advisor Margaret Otieno and her organization Indigi Collectives. And here's our intern Sanaa modeling one of these cute and functional bags! If you'd like one, please be sure to include your mailing address in the donation form above. Thank you.
